Volunteer

We are an entirely volunteer-run nonprofit organization. Volunteers boost our power, lighten the load, and increase our impact.  And most of all, volunteers and interns believe in our cause to celebrate and uplift Black voices, art, culture, and history, and want to help strengthen our existence. We need lionhearted people to help out at the Center, in the community, or from the comfort of their home. There are several roles, and you choose the one that inspires you:  

Current Volunteer needs

  • Gallery Attendant / Docent: greet and ticket visitors and share our exhibit stories  

  • Archivist / Librarian: help keep record of our extensive collection of African American, African, and African Diaspora books, magazines, and records; envision and implement ways to share these with educators and the community  

  • Assistant Curator: selects, researches,  and interprets objects from our 600+ object collection of African American, African and Diaspora material culture, in items ranging from 10 to 110 years old and masks to paintings to fashion; in addition to selecting works, helping to write labels, catalog essays, and other content; has a passion art history, visual arts, and culture, and an eye for staging, display, and decoration  

  • Conservators: helps repair and conserve delicate, fragile, or damaged objects, and strategizes best organization and storage practices for our library and material culture collections; has a passion for materials, science, and the arts 

  • Educators: work with our Board to plan, design, and implement educational outreach and programming for children and adults, including school tours and original content about Black arts, culture, and history. 

  • Community Builder: help organize and facilitate town hall presentations with allied nonprofits and organizations like BLM, BHTNH, and Racial Unity. 

  • SAACC Historian: help organize and document the history of our organization, including arranging news clippings, photographs, and records, and conducting oral histories with Board members and volunteers 

  • Maya Angelou to Sidney Poitier: share your own Black cultural excellence as performers, actors, readers, poets and spoken word artists, storytellers, and the like at a SAACC event 

  • Starlight: assist with publicity, social media and marketing; duties include writing and distributing press releases, and organizing press conferences and events
